English 1 @ Independence High School

English 1/9 is a one-year, college preparatory course which teaches students to write successful, multiple-paragraph compositions and to identify and use in their writing advanced grammatical structures. The course will include the study of literary works and will integrate the learning of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

This course satisfies one year of the East Side Union High School District's English requirement. This course satisfies one year of the English requirement at the University of California and the California State University.

Required Reading: Romeo & Juliet, To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Odyssey (or a mythology unit, in which The Odyssey may be included)
